Karis stressed that the current situation is not the fault of the Russians themselves, recalling the days of the Soviet Union, when a small number of Estonians protested against the regime, which often led to their imprisonment.
The President of Estonia stressed that the priority is to stop the Russian “war machine.” We will do everything we can to bring Russia and Putin to their knees. He added that it would then be possible to start serious talks on ending the war in Ukraine.
Kares also referred to the recent incident on the border with Russia, when Russian border guards seized Estonian border buoys from the Narva River. The president warned against giving in to provocations, stressing the need to restore the buoys.
Estonian border services decided not to escalate the situation, allowing the Russians to remove the buoy. However, as the authorities emphasized, Estonia should prepare for similar situations in the future, especially since the border guards plan to install more buoys on the Narva River.
– There is no hotline, but some channels remain open. Information is flowing, as it did even between two enemy countries during World War II, Karis said, referring to Estonia’s relations with Russia. He added that not all details could be published.
