Extension of the railway line to Kashubia for PLN 1.5 billion

Nine offers ranging from PLN 1.54 to 1.95 billion were submitted in the tender for the design and expansion of the railway line between Oswa and Somonin, which is part of the Gdynia-Kosierzyna route. The main part of the work will include the construction of a second track and the electrification of the line over an area of 28 km. Implementation will take 3 years and 8 months.

The expansion of Line 201 to two tracks on the section from Osowa to Kościerzyna and the electrification of the Kościerzyna-Gdynia route were announced years ago. Thanks to this, after the electrification of the PKM, which was completed in June, it became possible to operate electric trains to Kashubia and Gdynia.

However, the investment funded by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe has been delayed for a long time. Going back to 2020, the timeline predicted that the dual-track, electrified Line 201 would be built by 2025. However, it has long been known that this will not happen.

Therefore, it was necessary to build the so-called Kartuzi bypass road, that is, a single-lane bypass road. More about this in the second part of the text.

In October, PKP PLK canceled measures to expand and electrify lines 201 Kościerzyna – Somonino and 214 Somonino – Kartuzy. It was said that the reason was errors in documentation.

Fortunately, there is also positive news. Railway workers from Warsaw opened envelopes of offers to expand the 28-kilometre-long section of the “Two Hundred and One” line between Osowa and Somonin.

  • Modernization of railway line No. 201 on the Somonino-Gdansk Oswa section with a length of more than 28 km,
  • Construction of slip roads in the Glenwich substation area enabling collision-free directional connectivity of railway lines 201 and 229,
  • Modification works on sections of railway lines 248 and 253 (PKM) to ensure correct and coherent connection of track systems between the above-mentioned lines and track system of railway line No. 201,
  • Electrification of railway line No. 229, over a section of more than 9 km, and line No. 214, over a section of more than 4 km.

The contractor will have 44 months to complete these tasks, i.e. 3 years and 8 months from the date of signing the contract.

Nine companies and unions decided to take up this application. The difference in offers amounted to PLN 405 million.

  1. Pomeranian Mechanics and Tracks Company, Traction and Communications Works Factory – DOM – 1,541,915,358.77 Polish zlotys
  2. bodymix – 1,586,679,552.88 Polish zloty
  3. Zoe and Fabi Polska – PLN 1,619,622,180.00
  4. PORR and Trakcja system – 1,640,046,329.99 Polish zloty
  5. Strabag – 1,675,031,978.55 Polish zlotys
  6. TRACK TEC CONSTRUCTION i INTOP Warsaw – 1,711,916,813.64 Polish zlotys
  7. Turbull – 1,726,848,243.04 Polish zlotys
  8. Intercore Technical Services Company – 1,849,730,521.35 Polish zlotys
  9. Doug Construction and Trading Joint Stock Company – 1,946,291,949.54 Polish zlotys

Despite these differences, all performances fall within the budget of railway workers from Warsaw, which amounts to PLN 2,148,581,495.98.

Kartuzi crossing is ready, but closed

Return to the Kartuzi bypass route, i.e. a diversion aimed at enabling the maintenance of rail traffic on the route from Tricity to Kartuzi, while electrification and expansion to two tracks on line 201 will be carried out.

The construction of the bypass corridor was divided into two tasks.

  1. PKM has built approximately 1.5 km of track on the PKM Gdańsk-Kiełpinek – Gdańsk-Kokoszki section
  2. PLK has modernized approximately 16 km of the existing line Gdańsk-Kokoszki – Stara Piła – Żukowo – Glincz

The PKM portion was completed in June, and the PLK portion finished its portion in December. However, it was closed again shortly afterwards.

– For a period of two months, for the contractor to remove any defects discovered during acceptance – a person who knows the subject well tells us this.
As we were able to unofficially determine, there is a possibility that the trains will be launched after the bypass with the schedule adjustment in March 2024.
