An explosion has occurred in the parking lot of a synagogue in the coastal French town of La Grande-Motte. One car exploded and another caught fire. Local police, who are treating the incident as an attempted arson, said an officer was injured in the incident.
“A car exploded in front of the synagogue in La Grande-Motte. A local police officer was injured,” William Maury of the French police union said on social media.
He told BFM TV that the policeman’s life was not in danger.
Local media reported that two cars caught fire, one of which contained at least one gas cylinder.
Police are treating the incident as an attempted arson. However, no further details have been provided.
As Reuters noted, the parking lot belonged to the synagogue.
The search for the perpetrator is still ongoing.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced that police are searching for the suspect.
“I want to assure our fellow Jewish citizens and the city (La Grande-Motte – ed.) of my full support,” Darmanin wrote on the 10th platform. He added that at the request of President Emmanuel Macron, “all means are being mobilized” to find the perpetrator.
