From Wrestling to Opera | Pres

We don’t just mess around! We do a little, but nothing!

Where does this infected language come from? From the Le Dimond Theater in Quebec City, it defines its work as: from wrestling to opera.

Are these formal words the work of two people applauding after a successful premiere or when a show is running at full capacity?

He is Robert LePage, an internationally recognized artist. She was Linda Beaulieu, her sister, the Queen Mother to those closest to her. Twins, but 14 months apart.

For 25 years with her brother, Linda’s job was to take care of the maid, allowing the creator to work in peace.

La Diamante is Robert’s creation, but built by Linda, who watches over her brother as she watches him.

Light years later, the Westburn Institute—Linda arrived in a less orderly, more organic world—culture—to which she added her stamp, so to speak. Group meetings with your feet on the conference table, it ended: “I don’t want to see your feet, I want to see your face!” »

Robert’s base camp has always been Quebec, although he continues to travel the planet in a mad rush. Six countries in the last three months!

If you are surprised by the words read at the beginning, it is because you do not know the hidden face of Robert LePage himself. At first glance, the man is shy and a little cold.

But the hidden side eventually reveals a man who remembers where he came from, and ultimately it’s not that hard to break through.

With his piece 887He explained his childhood and described his family. Courville He, a young man and The dark side of the moon, young age. The first play has been touring the world for seven years; The dark side for 22 years; And Courville Since last September. Talking about planetary wins…

Downstream parents. Not much clover. The father, a taxi driver, was a former member of the navy who, like the mother, enlisted and met when he returned from World War II.

Linda and Robert have been a team for a long time. Even at school, when she walked past, kids waved at Robert and laughed at her difference. The love between them is unconditional, however No nonsense, even the disgrace of the family is somewhat proud. If the younger one doesn’t like what she sees on the boards, the sentence will come out harsh. But no hate.

The Robert we don’t know, the everyday Robert, has inherited Jean’s aunt’s house, the only one of the nine children in the family who hasn’t lived in rent all his life. Well married, Jean, she struck well. Robert and Linda spent time there during summers and holidays. On the banks of the St-Charles River, still in the national capital, Robert lives in harmony with his past.

Most of his friends come from non-cultural backgrounds and are not jet-setters. So much family, even on the other side of the world, that he would call because he was worried about a daughter-in-law’s health. Cleverly, it could financially help a young stuntman or a budding ax thrower dreaming of the circus!

Opera is great, we get it, but wrestling?

What you see is, in LePage, at that time, we heard the sibling fight on TV. A religion like many Quebec families. Edward Carpenter was the favorite, Killer Kowalski was the most impressive, and Giant Ferre was the favorite. Patty, who suffers from dementia, often fears that the protagonists will enter the apartment. Explaining to Patty that the 887 is safe is complicated.

For Robert, fighting has become a reminder, an art.

He found fans of this show game and turned it into their main pastime. We’re talking about North Shore Pro Wrestling (NSPW) here, and that’s it! Robert brought them back to Le Diamond for a few galas a year. Sold out every time, it delivers absolutely crazy and dizzying evenings.

Customers around the ring, classic: connoisseurs, cracked and ecstatic, who are part of the scenario. But otherwise, in the room, many unattractive Calot and other civil society clients. It’s all on board, and you won’t believe it, a villain Party.

Robert LePage with his wrestling buddy Marco Estrada

The wrestlers became Robert’s friends. We’re a long way from the Met in New York, where he often directed productions. Artists names like Falco, Angel, but also Quebecers working in construction or owners of patisseries – yes, you read that right – or microbreweries.

Starring Marco Estrada, a corrections officer at a Quebec prison. It looks like it’s quiet in its numbers, and it’s wrong Wings. I understand them, a big boy, you matter! But don’t look for where Estrada is from, Le Goulet in New Brunswick, there are only Roussels. A genius, he has been stumbling through his course for 20 years. His body is tiring, but he makes up for it with more dramatic performances. It makes the job even better, he says!

In programming, struggle rubs shoulders Seven Branches of Ota River ; Starring Tom Waits; NYX; Becoming Chelsea; Crypto; Prince Hamlet and Moby Dick.

And Diamond is currently designing an exhibit with the Musee de la Civilization… Wrestling!

The unique cultural community of our unique community is definitely in Quebec!

between us

God exists! To repeat what an old colleague from New Jersey told me after the first game, I think it was the only win of the year for his favorite American football team, the New York Jets. I think the same after the midterm elections in the US. It could have been a lot worse… Am I becoming an evangelist, my faith?
