blue moon

It was the second full moon in August. The first – the Sturgeon Moon – we can admire on August 1. This phenomenon is called a blue moon. blue moon). There is also an older, rarely used definition that “blue” is the third of the four full moons in the sidereal season. In English, there is also the phrase “once in a blue moon”, which means something as rare as a blue moon.

– A blue moon is rare because the distance from full moon to full moon is 29.5 days. Therefore, the first full moon of the month must occur on the first day of the month, so that the second full moon occurs on the last day, as explained by the deputy director of the Silesian Planetarium, Damien Jablica. – What we will have to deal with on the night of August 30 to 31 is the introduction of the lunar and astronomical calendar together with the official calendar.

It is worth noting that the natural moon, contrary to the name of the phenomenon, will not turn blue at all. During moonrise and sunset, due to the movement of the atmosphere, we will see it in orange.

This year, the blue moon coincided with a supermoon. For the third time in a row, our natural satellite was very close to Earth at the time of the full moon, only 357,344 km from our planet.

Another supermoon awaits us in September. The opposite of this phenomenon is the miniature moon, where the distance between the Earth and the Moon is at its greatest and reaches about 405,000 km.

The appearance of a giant blue moon is rare. According to NASA, the last time it appeared in our sky was in December 2009, and the next time will have to wait until 2037.
