The tragedy occurred on Wednesday, March 27, at around 9:45 a.m. on the A9 motorway between the Wiedemar and Schkeuditzer Kreuz intersections. For unknown reasons, the Flixbus driver unexpectedly ran off the road, hit several trees and fell.
There were 52 passengers and two drivers on board the bus (a 62-year-old Czech and a 53-year-old Slovak). Witnesses to the accident were the first to come to the rescue. Services were called. As many as five helicopters were brought in for rescue.
