Google Android TV Amazon Fire OS TCL Agreement

The Competition Commission of India announced last week that Google is not allowing producers who cooperate with the concern to install an alternative Fire TV system on their TVs.

On Thursday, Amazon announced that two TCL TVs with well-known Fire TV hardware software will debut in European markets in the fall.

So far, the Chinese company has only produced Android TVs. Protocol.com has learned that this is the result of an agreement between Google and Amazon, made a few months ago.

Not only Android TV

Thanks to this agreement, Amazon will be able to cooperate not only with TCL, but also with other manufacturers, such as Xiaomi (the concern was announced about such agreements at the beginning of the year). Earlier, incl. Chinese companies have not been able to do this due to licensing terms imposed by Google. The deal may relieve some of the pressure from regulators around the world on Google.

At a press conference, Amazon Vice President of Entertainment Devices, Daniel Rioch, said the Indian Commission’s report speaks for itself. He declined to comment further on the matter. Google does not want to comment on its licensing policy regarding Android TV.

The concluded agreement applies not only to the TV market, but also to the requirements that Google imposes on mobile phone manufacturers that offer its operating system. If TCL decides to stop working with Google, it may offer a different Smart TV platform, but it will lose the ability to install Android on its smartphones.

The market for TV operating systems and smart TV receivers is becoming more open. Until recently, South Korean manufacturers Samsung and LG installed their own Tizen and WebOS software only on their own devices. Recently, they started making licenses available to other manufacturers. In the future, they can get advertising revenue from FAST services (Free Channels), such as Samsung TV Plus and LG Channels, which are not available in Poland.

A Hub Entertainment Research study showed that 56 percent. Smart TV owners in the United States use the Tizen system. The following were taken by the following systems: Roku (44%), LG’s WebOS (38%), Amazon Fire TV (29%), Android TV (28%) and Vizio SmartCast (21%). Some users use several systems, because apart from TVs, they also use set-top boxes.
