The Bank of England has announced that new banknotes bearing the image of King Charles III will enter circulation on June 5. It is scheduled to be used with those bearing a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, who died in 2022.
New banknote designs in all four denominations – £5, £10, £20 and £50 – will be introduced in December 2022. The image of the King on the obverse and in the clear security window is the only change to the existing banknotes, meaning the side The back will hold portraits of Winston Churchill, Jane Austen, William Turner and Alan Turing respectively.
Banknotes bearing the image of King Charles III
The Bank of England announced, in a statement, that a new series of banknotes will be printed in sufficient quantities only to replace those withdrawn from circulation due to wear and tear or in the event of increased demand. This gradual introduction into circulation aims to minimize the impact of changes on the natural environment and reduce costs, and is in line with the guidelines of the Royal Court.
The Bank of England also announced that an auction of new banknotes with lower serial numbers will be held in the summer, with the proceeds going to charity.
Charles III is the second British monarch to appear on Bank of England banknotes.
The first coin to bear the image of Charles III
In December 2022, the first coin bearing the image of Charles III entered normal circulation – with a face value of 50 pence, and more will gradually appear.
As with banknotes, coins bearing the images of Elizabeth II and Charles III will be used in parallel for many years.
