Greeks write about Poland. Catastrophic situation. “The Greatest Fall”

In 2023, potato production in the European Union countries amounted to 48.3 million tons. Compared to 2022, there was an increase, with harvests at 47.5 million tons. However, the general trend over the past 20 years is not favorable.

According to Eurostat data, potato production has been declining for two decades. In 2023, 27.9 million tonnes fewer tubers were produced than in 2000. This represents a 36.7% decrease across the EU.

The decline in production is closely linked to the decline in the area planted with potatoes in the European Union. It fell by more than half from 3 million hectares to 1.3 million hectares in the years 2000-2023. Interestingly, this decline is the largest in Poland. Over 23 years, 84.9% of the cultivated area disappeared – this is the largest percentage in the community. The Greeks also say that there are fewer potatoes in their country, which is why they have to import them from abroad. The problem is that their stocks are running out.

Fewer potatoes. Climate change?

What is the reason for the small cultivated area and thus the small number of potatoes? The Greek portal tanea.gr points to climate change. It is mainly about water shortages and drought. And the Greeks note that potatoes, which traditionally appear on the tables, are not just a scarce commodity.

As we read, extreme temperatures and weather conditions also caused damage to horticultural, woody and vine crops, limiting their production. The jump in olive oil prices over the past two years is a typical example of these effects.

Unfortunately, in recent months, diseases affecting farm animals – goats and sheep – have also developed. This may cause problems in the production of cheese and dairy products.

A decrease in the supply of products will cause their prices to rise. This is already noticeable because, for example, tomato prices have increased by 36.36% compared to 2022.
