Toronto police are trying to apprehend a man who sprayed an “unknown substance” in the face of a taxi driver Wednesday morning after asking him if he was Muslim.
“The Toronto Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a man in connection with an investigation into a hate and armed attack,” the police force said in a statement Wednesday, the “Toronto Star” reported.
Early Wednesday morning, at 4:25 a.m., Toronto police were called to the city’s south side, where a taxi driver was reportedly sprayed in the face with an “unknown substance” after he rolled down his window to ask the suspect if he wanted a ride. , the press release said.
That’s when the white man, about 6 feet tall, wearing a black coat and pants, allegedly asked if he was Muslim before spraying him.
Police estimate the suspect to be in his twenties or thirties.
“If a criminal offense is alleged to have been committed […] And it appears to be motivated by prejudice or hatred, the officer in charge will consult the Crown,” the police clarified, adding that the element of hatred may be a criterion during sentencing.
