A man in England saw his head swell uncontrollably due to a reaction to hair dye. Daily Mail.
On July 27, Blackburn resident Ryan Briggs applied black dye sent by his mother to cover some gray hairs that had begun to grow on his head.
The 27-year-old says he felt a burning sensation but assumed it was a normal reaction and went to bed.
After a good night’s sleep, he woke up with a skin reaction on his upper forehead, but thought it was a minor inconvenience and decided to go to work.

It was only after he went to work that his head began to swell. Therefore, the colleagues advised him to return home before going to the doctor at the hospital. The latter said to come back the next day if the reaction worsened.

“My partner was stunned. She couldn’t see me because I didn’t look like myself. My head was like a hot air balloon,” said Ryan Briggs.
“It was horrible. It was huge. I was like Megamind!”, he adds.

Instead of resolving, the situation worsened over the following hours: swelling spread across his face, disfiguring him to the point where he could barely open one of his eyes.
This time when he was taken to the hospital by ambulance, Ryan Briggs learned that he had reacted to paraphenylenediamine, a chemical compound often used in dyes.

He remained in hospital for 13 hours, during which doctors checked that the swelling had not spread to his neck and was not endangering his breathing.
The patient had to take 25 pills over the next five days to get back to normal.
“I have yellow and green scabs on my scalp, but my face is back to its normal shape,” said Mr. Briggs said.
The latter also recommends that anyone using a new dye do a test run before putting it on their hair.
