Although the first version of the HEVC codec was published a decade ago, it has only been widely used in recent years. It needs less memory, which improves performance and productivity, which is why it is used, among other things, to deliver HD and Ultra HD content during streaming. HEVC is used by, among others: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, NBC, Paramount Global, Warner Bros. Discovery.
HEVC's improved performance over its AVC predecessor means it offers many benefits across the entire video ecosystem. HEVC provides consumers with better quality without increased data and bandwidth requirements, helping speed up video transmissions and improving cloud storage costs for streaming service providers, said Rajesh Pankaj, CTO at InterDigital.
DVB-T2 with HEVC codec in digital terrestrial TV
In the coming years, analysts expect a dynamic increase in the number of devices that support the HEVC codec. Every year, 2.3 billion TVs, set-top boxes and streaming boxes are added. That's more than 96 percent. All this equipment is sold in the market.
In the first half of 2022, MUX-1, MUX-2 and MUX-4 for digital terrestrial television in Poland with the main commercial channels (including TVN, Polsat and TV Puls) switched to broadcasting in the DVB-T2 standard with HEVC codec. This allowed these stations to improve their quality from standard definition (SD) to high definition (HD). MUX-3 along with the main Polish TV channels will undergo a similar migration in the middle of December 15 (Western Poland) and December 19 (Eastern Poland). TVP3 and TVP Historia will start broadcasting in HD.
GfK data shows that up to 71 percent in 2022 TV buyers in Poland chose 4K equipment.
