Daniil Medvedev will be Hubert Hurkacz's rival in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Australian Open Grand Slam hardcourt tournament in Melbourne, where the third-seeded Moscow native on Monday defeated Nuno Borges in four sets.
Given the short preparation period and the few matches he has played, Daniil Medvedev is unsure of his condition heading into the Australian Open 2024. And yes, the Muscovite in Melbourne may be far from optimal, but he is winning, and that is the most important thing for him. On Monday, he defeated Nuno Borges 6-3, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-1 and qualified for the quarter-finals.
Medvedev, seeded third, was the favorite in the battle against 26-year-old Borges, who was making his debut in the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament and caused a sensation in the previous round by eliminating Grigor Dimitrov. The Moscow player had the advantage from the start, causing several errors to the Portuguese and after less than two hours of play he led 2-0 in sets.
Medvedev could, or rather, could have won 3-0. He led 5-2 in the third set, but wasted two match points, then was unable to control his nerves and lost five consecutive matches for an inexplicable reason.
However, the tennis player from Moscow got back on track in the fourth round. He quickly broke his opponent and took a 3-0 lead. This time he did not give up the advantage. What's more, he won another break and finished the entire match.
The match lasted three hours and seven minutes. During this time, Medvedev served 13 aces, was broken four times, converted six of 13 break points, registered 34 finishing moves and unforced errors, and scored a total of 152 points, 22 more than Borges.
In the quarter-finals, Medvedev will face third seed Hubert Hurkacz, ninth seed. This will be the sixth match between these tennis players. The score is 3-2 for the Pole, including 1-1 on hard courts.
Hurkacz will face a big challenge. Medvedev has been the world's leading player for several years. He is currently third in the ATP Rankings, but in 2022 he was at the top for 16 weeks. He has won 20 major series titles, including one Grand Slam title (2021 US Open). He played in four other Grand Slam finals, two of which were in Melbourne (2021-22 season).
Hurkacz's match with Medvedev will be held on Wednesday. Start time not yet known.
