“I can’t play anymore”; Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain explains how his health issues affect his playing

Iron Maiden drummer Nico McBrien has opened up about his health issues and the impact they’re having on his drumming career. In January 2023, McBrain suffered a stroke at his home in Boca Raton, Florida, resulting in partial paralysis. With prompt treatment and diligent rehabilitation from specialists at the Marcus Neuroscience Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, McBrain has made significant progress in his recovery.

At a recent concert with Titanium Tart’s project at Piper’s Pub in Pompano Beach, Florida, McBrain spoke to the crowd about his journey. He said: “I had my ups and downs last year… I couldn’t play – my right side was paralyzed. Fortunately, Boca Raton Regional Hospital has an incredible occupational therapy unit. A certain Julie Blum took care of me and within three months, I was back playing.

Despite his progress, McBrain admits that he can’t play some Iron Maiden songs exactly as recorded, especially Got Somewhere in Time. He explains: “When we rehearsed for the Future Past tour last year, we played God Somewhere in Time as the opener. The studio version has a center section where it’s just the snare drum. I can’t play anymore. You’ll notice, people say, ‘He doesn’t play the drum roll anymore.’ . Well, that’s why I can’t do it anymore…”

McBrien also said that his bandmate, bassist Steve Harris, helped him adapt, including rearranging some parts.
