I have no children and no loans. But I have three apartments and three cars.

He is currently single, and his six-year relationship recently ended. They talked about children, but neither of them had any desire to start a family. Each wanted to live and see the world. Eventually, the couple broke up.

Parents pay. They’re approaching 60, and maybe it’s not what they envisioned. David often hears that they can’t wait to have a grandchild.“Youth passes, you lose your best years, as a grandfather will you go to interviews?” – these are the texts they regularly give to their eldest son during every weekly meeting.

Most of his friends already have children. “I can take care of them for five or ten minutes at most. Later, each one of them starts to annoy me a lot,” David admits. “I just don’t feel it.” “I’m a PlayStation uncle: Go ahead, don’t bother me,” he adds.

He tells his friends that he doesn’t feel the calling. He notes that most of it is related to loans. He himself had inherited an apartment near Kielce from his grandparents, and had bought two more with cash, intending to rent them out. He could afford them precisely because he had no children.

– I’ll admit I’ve been a lover for a long time. I don’t come from a rich family, I have achieved everything through my own hard work. I earn money as a driving instructor. I lived with my parents and saved money, says David.

– I inherited the rental rights from my grandparents, and I just had to buy the apartment. Approx. 100 thousand PLN invested in renovation. I bought subsequent buildings on a commercial basis, in cash. – Explains.

He also invested in several garages. Just for his own pleasure, he bought three cars, which he calls “weekend toys.” As he himself admits, he is the type who always wants to have a lot of springs. Finances allow for this, and he fulfills his childhood dreams. His passion for cars is basically his only major financial whim that he spends on.

“I am a frugal person. If I have to buy something, I choose the top shelf. However, I don’t go shopping and don’t waste money,” says David. He rarely goes on long vacations, although this is not due to the need to save money, but rather to his passion for short trips. This summer, he will go to Berlin for a few days, and in October he has planned a vacation in Croatia.

Although she doesn’t want children now, she doesn’t rule out that she will decide to have them one day. However, he has a strong feeling about it. The decision to become a parent must be preceded by preparation, including financial preparation. He does not believe that this is primarily the man’s job, and he does not mind if both parties in the relationship are responsible for maintaining the family. If he has a child, on the one hand, he wants to provide him with prosperity, but on the other hand, he would like to teach him to respect money. He imagines that his child will have to earn money to buy a laptop or smartphone, for example by helping with household chores.

– I noticed that many people decide to have children even though they don’t have the conditions to raise them. They earn minimum wage and can barely make ends meet. I did the opposite. – He explains. – I think that if a child appears, a large part of the money I invested in real estate will go to his needs. It makes perfect sense, I want to provide my child with the best, the man says.

From last year’s Ibris survey for Onet It shows that 55 percent of Poles who do not have children do not want or do not know yet whether they want to have children in the future. Participants were asked about the reasons for their reluctance to have children. Several answers could indicate this, the most common of which are, among others: Fear of reduced comfort in life (62 percent of answers), not having a private apartment (54 percent), and a difficult or uncertain financial situation (48 percent of answers).

Lack of housing was particularly important for men – two-thirds of the men surveyed mentioned it. In addition, they cited a difficult financial situation and fear of a decline in the quality of life. Lack of housing was also one of the main reasons for not having children in the 25-34 age group, the age group in which most children are born. It was mentioned by two-thirds of the respondents.

The financial situation of Poles is only one aspect of the decline in parenthood. 57 percent of people who participated in a Onet survey answered that they simply do not like children. 62 percent are afraid of the world situation (war, epidemic, crisis). 46% declare that there is no suitable partner. After all, 45 percent of participants indicated that they feared having a child with a disability.
