Bulgarian media reported that Bulgarian Prosecutor Ivan Gechev, who is visiting Ukraine, said on Friday that if Vladimir Putin came to Bulgaria, he would be arrested immediately.
This is the first official position of the Bulgarian authorities regarding the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in The Hague for the Russian dictator. So far, President Rumen Radev and Justice Minister Krom Zharkov have refused to answer questions on the matter.
Firm position of the Bulgarian authorities
Bulgaria, like all countries that belong to the ICC, has an obligation to detain Vladimir Putin if he is on its territory and to hand him over to the court. In this regard, the Bulgarian position is categorical, ”Geschev said.
The prosecutor visited Bokza and Borodzianka near Kiev, where Russians committed mass crimes against civilians in the spring of 2022.
Geshev signed a memorandum of cooperation with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrei Kostin. It was agreed to a joint investigation into the war crimes and genocide committed by Russian forces in the occupied Ukrainian territories.
