Iga Świątek met another challenger in Cincinnati. Can the rising tennis star keep up with the Pole?

On Friday evening, Iga Svetek defeated Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk 6:2, 6:2 in the 8/1 finals of the tournament in Cincinnati. The Pole did not give her opponent a chance and finished the entire match in 69 minutes. Earlier, the bronze medalist from Paris defeated Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva 6-0, 6-7 (8-10), 6-2.

The Italian tennis player played better in the match between Andreeva and Paolini. After two breaks, she won the first set 6:3. The problems came in the second set, where the top-ranked player began to make a lot of unforced errors. Her young opponent caught wind and in the eighth game broke the racket ranked fifth in the WTA rankings. In the end, the Russian won the set 6:3 and leveled the score.

The third game went exactly as Andreeva wanted, as she broke Paolini’s serve twice in the first five games and then held the advantage until the end of the match. She won the final set 6:2. The 17-year-old Russian started competing at the highest level of tennis surprisingly early. At such a young age, she has already won a WTA title and also reached the quarterfinals of the French Open.

In the weeks before, Andreeva and Diana Snajder won the silver medal in doubles at the Paris Olympics as members of the neutral singles team. In the final, they lost to Sara Errani and, yes, Jasmine Paolini.
