In an interview with the Total Film website, the actor admitted that the new film, which he shot with Doug Liman, differs significantly from their previous production with the adventures of Jason Bourne:
It was a lot of fun working on the car chase scene, which was different from what I had previously shot with Lyman. Jason Bourne knows exactly what he’s doing and where he’s going at all times. Rory is his opposite.
Doug Liman also admitted that working with Damon was different this time, mainly because fewer producers wanted something from him consistently:
The last time I worked with Matt, we were kids constantly getting yelled at by authority figures in Hollywood. For a moment on Instigators I thought, “There’s no studio head. We’re shooting this for Matt and Ben’s company.” [Afflecka]. How did we end up in this room as these adults now?”
Instigators – what is the movie about?
The heroes are Rory (Matt Damon) and Coby (Casey Affleck), who become accomplices in a planned robbery. A desperate father and an ex-convict want to rob a corrupt politician. When everything doesn’t go according to plan, chaos erupts. The duo is pursued by police, bureaucrats and vengeful gangsters. Not knowing what to do, they convince Rory’s handler (Hong Chow) to join them on their incredible escape, during which they must put aside their differences to avoid being caught or killed.
The cast also includes Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Toby Jones, Jack Harlow, and Ron Perlman.
