On Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee restored the possibility of Russians and Belarusians competing in individual sports under a neutral flag. Previously, the head of the organization, Thomas Bach, recommended such a solution. The decision does not yet mean approval to participate in the next Olympic Games 2024 in Paris.
During the press conference held on Tuesday, Thomas Bach said that he recommends that Russians and Belarusians be allowed to attend the Games in Paris, but with several conditions.
A few hours later, the International Olympic Committee decided to accept athletes from Russia and Belarus in individual competitions.
The most important conditions are: participation in individual competitions only, prohibition of athletes who actively support the war, associated with the army or military clubs.
“The participation of athletes holding Russian and Belarusian passports in international competitions is a success,” Bach said at the start of the IOC board meeting in Lausanne. He also referred to several disciplines, including tennis or cycling.
The International Olympic Committee will decide whether Russians and Belarusians can participate in the 2024 Olympics
Bach said at the conference that the board of directors of the organization will decide “at the appropriate time” the possibility of participation of Russians and Belarusians in the Olympic Games in Paris next year.
This decision sparked a lot of controversy. Several countries, including Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, are threatening to boycott the event.

We will not be able to find a solution that satisfies everyone. “We may have to live with that,” said the IOC president.
