Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian is currently in Turkey. In an interview with TRT World TV, he said that Iran does not recognize the lands annexed by Ukraine as Russian.
Iran does not recognize the annexation of Ukraine
We recognize the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states under international law, and for this reason, despite the excellent relations between Tehran and Moscow, we do not recognize the separation of Crimea from Ukraine. We did not recognize the secession of Luhansk and Donetsk from Ukraine, said the Iranian Foreign Minister.
According to him, the Iranian authorities adhere to their “unwavering principle” in foreign policy. “When we say that the war in Ukraine is not a solution, we believe in our position as a basic political principle on which we depend,” Abdollahian said.

Russia illegally annexed Crimea in 2014. In 2022, during the invasion of Ukraine, the Russian authorities announce the annexation of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson regions of Ukraine. Kyiv maintains that the territories currently controlled by Russia are temporarily occupied and that it does not intend to come to terms with the illegal seizure of these territories from Ukraine.
Iran has so far cooperated closely with Russia. Unofficially, it has become the main supplier of weapons used by Russian soldiers in Ukraine. In December, the United States imposed sanctions on Iranian companies that ship drones and missiles to Russia. However, this did not stop all trade.
There is also a project to construct a new transport corridor. It will make it possible to circumvent Western sanctions imposed after the outbreak of the war and sell goods directly, for example. to India.
