The Belarusian Ministry of Defense is building a new military city in the Gomel region in the east of the country, 40 km from the border with Ukraine. – Radio Swaboda reported on Monday.
Construction of the city, which began in 2023, is scheduled to be completed in 2027, but the first part of it will be put into operation in March this year.
The construction of a new military facility may be linked to announcements by Alexander Lukashenko, who announced the creation of the Southern Operations Command in the Armed Forces in 2022, Radio Swaboda wrote.
Ukrainian military expert Oleh Zhdanov told Svaboda Radio that a garrison will likely be deployed in the new military city to protect the border.
– But if Belarus and Russia unite politically, the doctrine will turn offensive – said the expert, adding that he “would not be surprised” if several such facilities are built along the Belarusian-Ukrainian border.
A former Belarusian officer currently fighting in the Kalinovsky regiments (a unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces consisting mainly of volunteers of Belarusian nationality), told Radio Swaboda that in his opinion The new city may become useful in the event of an attack on Ukraine from the north in order to seize Chernihiv.
