Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp announced that Joel Matip suffered a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament.
On Sunday, Liverpool faced Fulham in the English Premier League (4: 3), and Joel Matip was forced to leave the field in the 69th minute. British media had previously reported that he had suffered a serious knee injury. After Wednesday’s league match against Sheffield United, which the Reds won 2-0, Jurgen Klopp confirmed this.
-It’s anterior cruciate ligament, torn. Unfortunately, I was expecting this from the first second. Everything pointed to this. It’s a pity – the German coach admitted.
The 2023/2024 season is likely over for Matip.
“Devastating blow,” James Pearce said on Twitter.
The 32-year-old defender participated in 14 matches this season. This included 10 matches in the Premier League, three matches in the Europa League and one in the League Cup.
We will see how this injury affects his future at the club. The defender’s contract is valid until June 30, 2024 only.
Against Sheffield, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahim Konate played at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.
Another Reds player, Alexis McAllister, suffered an injury during the match. It remains to be seen whether and for how long he will be sidelined.
