“We usually see Olympus Mons in narrow strips from above, but by pointing the spacecraft toward the horizon, we can see in a single image just how dominant it is on the landscape,” said Mars Odyssey Project Scientist, David S. Jeffrey Plaut From NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which manages the mission.

The base of Olympus Mons extends for 600 km, and the mountain is 25-27 km high. And here scientists recently made an unusual discovery – they discovered frost and ice on the craters of extinct volcanoes on the surface of Mars at the equator.
