Music and space are a perfect combination. It was a great symphony

it’s called cosmic cycles It had its world premiere in Washington, DC. What is all this art? It is about showing pictures of different types of celestial bodies – the whole session is accompanied by live music. In a similar way, artists play, for example, music scores for cult films that are shown at the same time.

Perhaps the whole concept brings you to mind planets Gustav Holst. It was the English composer who, more than 100 years ago, put forward the original idea to create a symphonic suite of seven movements. They were respectively: Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus And Neptune.

Planetary was first publicly run in 1920, and since then the world of astronomy has changed…just about everything. After all, we’ve located the first exoplanets, managed to put the first artificial satellite into Earth’s orbit, and man has finally reached the moon. Right now, the orbit is getting crowded, people should soon be living permanently on the Silver Globe, more than five thousand exoplanets have been described, and thousands more are still awaiting confirmation.

Created by Henry Dillinger, the symphony was divided into seven parts and was based on photographs provided by NASA

For this reason, the New Symphony is something completely different. One of the authors of the whole idea was Piotr Gajewski, music director and conductor of the National Orchestra. The idea arose from him, according to which – instead of selecting images for a piece of music – it was decided to reverse the situation. In other words, it was about creating music for certain images.

As with Holst, the work here is divided into seven parts. The first takes us to perhaps the most important piece of the solar system puzzle, the sun. While the music plays, viewers can enjoy images of the star’s surface and the explosions that occur there. The second and third parts are devoted to the Earth. In addition to classical images, the creators also used visualizations showing, for example, sea currents, which may bring to mind the distinctive patterns used by Van Gogh.

The fourth part deals with the moon, then comes Mars and Jupiter. There was also room for objects like nebulae or black holes, which are capable of sucking in everything, including photons. Admittedly, the whole idea looks great, and its author, Henry Dillinger, describes it as an almost finished work of art. We can only hope that one day his band will visit the country on the Vistula.
