American singer Mariah Carey announced the deaths of her mother and sister on Monday, which “tragically” happened on the same day last weekend.
“I am heartbroken over the loss of my mother last weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life that same day,” the “All I Want for Christmas Is You” singer lamented in a press release on Monday, the BBC reported.
The multiple Grammy Award winner said he felt “blessed” to spend last week with his mother Patricia, who was 87 before she died, Sky News reported.
That same day, his sister Alison, 63, died. The cause of death of the two women was not specified.
The 55-year-old singer had complicated relationships with two women, whom she detailed in her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.”
Because, according to him, a certain rivalry arose between him and his mother, a former opera singer of Irish-American descent, due to professional jealousy over his success.
“When that person is your mother, when jealousy comes out at a very young age, it’s very painful,” she described, according to the BBC.
She described her troubled relationship with her brother Morgan and her sister Alison, alleging that it was “safer emotionally and physically for me to have no contact,” the British media continued.
Following the publication of the memoir, Alison reportedly filed a US$1.2 million lawsuit against her sister, whom she accused of causing her “extreme emotional distress” with the intent of “revenge”.
Despite this, the grieving singer thanked the public for their support in the final days.
“I appreciate everyone’s love, support and respect for my privacy at this impossible time,” he added in writing, according to Sky News.
