“New in Space”: A movie review with Emma Roberts. A failed comedy

Emma Roberts, who plays the main character nicknamed Brix in “New in Space”, has conquered Hollywood for years thanks to her appearances in TV series and youth films. Although she can be seen recently in a slightly more serious repertoire (emphasis on “somewhat”, because the titles in which she has starred include Marvel’s “Madame Web” and the romantic comedy “What is love?”), the actress in the new Prime Video production, she is inseparable from the image of a reckless American teenager. Quite the opposite – It takes a lot of experience to create a likable heroine.

Tiffany “Rex” Simpson is a bartender who doesn’t shy away from wild parties. She’s always dreamed of becoming an astronaut, but her life hasn’t turned out the way she wanted. When the opportunity to make her dreams come true arises, she decides to apply for NASA’s ambitious internship program. She doesn’t send in a consciously embellished resume, and when she’s accepted, she does everything she can to keep the truth from coming out.

I first met Emma Roberts as a child, when I watched the Nickelodeon series “Imperfect,” so while watching “New in Space,” I felt an inevitable wave of nostalgia. The actress, despite being 33 years old, plays a crazy girl in the film who lives day by day. She does everything to achieve her dreams, so she doesn’t think about the consequences of cheating. Roberts, using years of experience acting on both the small and big screens, excels at comedy. Rex arouses the audience’s sympathy. You involuntarily start to cheer for her, even though the actions she commits are immoral. I enjoyed watching Emma in this role.

But it cannot be said that the movie “New in Space” is a successful comedy. True, the creators use exaggerations to let the audience know that they are aware of the absurdity of the events depicted on the screen. After all, in what reality could such a situation occur? That is why I will not pick on the plot idea itself.

Prime Video’s novelty fails when the comedic scenes are intertwined with a romantic thread, namely the budding feeling between Rex and Logan (Tom Hopper). The ending is very predictable, and when it comes to Roberts’ on-screen companions, none of them evoke enough sympathy to engage with their dilemmas. There is a second feeling during the show.Not in any way a standout from modern comedies, New in Space is a movie I will probably soon forget.
