New NBP Coins: “The Beatification of Cardinal Stefan Wiesinski”

Cardinal Stefan Wiesinski (1901-1981), President of Poland, is one of the most important figures in the history of the Republic of Poland in the twentieth century. Through his word and deed, he left a lasting and indelible mark in the history of the Polish Church, becoming a true witness to God and a living example of love for his homeland.

He began his main service in his enslaved homeland during the intensification of the conflict between the communist authorities and the church. During the Stalinist period, he was arrested and imprisoned for three years in several places of detention.

At that time, Jasna Góra wrote Vows of the Nation, which after the release of the primates became the content of the great novena – for nine years to prepare the Poles for the millennium celebration of the baptism of Poland.

The President witnessed the spiritual renewal of Poland in the Marian cult, and thus on May 3, 1966, on behalf of the nation, he gave Poland into the bondage of Mother Mary for the freedom of the Church in Poland and around the world. The anniversary of Poland’s baptism has become a clear testament to identity, uniting generations of Poles over the centuries.

Primate Wyszyński actively participated in the work of the Second Vatican Council. He enjoyed the confidence of Popes John XXIII and Paul VI. The bonds of true friendship were strengthened in the relationship between the primates and Cardinal Karol Wojtyla, who, like John Paul II, expressed them with the words: “Revered and beloved President! (…), but also full of confidence begins a new papacy, if not for your faith, not retreat from imprisonment and suffering! , your heroic hope, and your complete entrustment to the Mother of the Church, Lula Yesna Jura – and this is the whole period of the history of the Church in our country. Fatherland to which they are connected with your episcopal and main service.

President Wyszyński, the Good Shepherd, left a rich heritage and exemplified service as a model of respect for every human being, concern for the unity of the Church and the solidarity of the nation.
