Nobel Prize 2021 – Chemistry. We met the winners

The committee explained that “Benjamin List and David Macmillan were awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing a new precise tool for building molecules: organic catalysis. This has had a significant impact on the development of pharmaceutical research and making chemistry greener.” Individuals.

The committee noted, “Scientists have long believed that there are only two types of catalysts available: metals and enzymes. Independently of each other, Nobel laureates Benjamin List and David Macmillan have developed a third type – symmetric organic catalysts.”

Born in Scotland in 1968, David Macmillan initially studied metallic catalysts that were easily damaged by moisture. He began to search for new, more durable catalysts using simple organic molecules. One of them turned out to be a very good stimulus in the asymmetric stimulus process. Macmillan is currently working at Princeton University (New Jersey, USA).

The German chemist Benjamin List (born in 1968) examined whether the entire enzyme molecule is really necessary in the catalysis process. He investigated whether the amino acid proline could catalyze chemical reactions. It turns out it works great. He currently works at the Max Planck Institute for Fur Kohlenforschung in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany.

This year’s Nobel Prizes

On Monday, we met the Nobel Prize winners in medicine. They were David Julius and Erdem Patbutian. They received the “Discovery of Temperature and Touch Receptors” award.

“Our ability to feel warmth, coolness and touch is essential for survival and supports our interaction with the world around us. In our daily lives, these sensations are obvious to us, but how do nerve impulses initiate until we feel heat and pressure “This question was resolved by this year’s Nobel Prize winners,” stated in Explanatory note for this year’s award.

Yesterday we learned that the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to three scientists. It was awarded to Siokoro Manabe and Klaus Haselmann for the physical model of Earth’s climate and the influence of people on changes in it, and this year’s third Nobel Prize winner – Giorgio Baresi – was honored for his discovery of the interactions in physical systems – from atoms to planetary systems.

Nobel prize. What in the coming days?

The first Thursday of October is reserved for celebrations in the Stock Exchange Hall at the Swedish Academy headquarters in Stockholm. Mats Malm, Secretary of this body, will reveal the name of this year’s winner Nobel Prize in Literature With a brief justification for the choice. It is also usually done in the language of the Nobel Prize winner.

On Friday, the world’s attention will turn to Oslo, as the Norwegian Committee traditionally recognizes Nobel Peace Prize. According to the Nobel Institute, 329 nominations were submitted to the institute this year, of which 234 are individuals and 95 are organizations. It is the third largest number of nominated candidates in history.

Nobel laureate in this field economics We will meet on Monday 11 October in Stockholm. The founder of this award is the Bank of Sweden and it is the only additional Nobel Prize not mentioned by Alfred Nobel in his will.

Nobel prize. How much is the prize?

The Nobel Prize is a gold medal and a calligraphy diploma in addition to money. Last year, the Nobel Foundation increased the prize money in each of the six areas by 1 million kronor (98,000 euros) to 10 million kronor (980,000 euros).

Due to the epidemic on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel in Stockholm, there will be no traditional celebrations. Just like last year, the winners will receive prizes in their countries through the Swedish diplomatic missions. The decision to present the award is expected to be issued in Oslo in mid-October.
