Cesare Koleza, the president of the Polish Football Association, made a decision about Czesław Mechniewicz. Former coach Legia Warszawa will no longer be the coach of the Polish national football team.
For some time there were reports in the media about the possible dismissal of Michniewicz. After Thursday’s meeting, Kulesza confirmed the 52-year-old would no longer captain the White-Red.
The official statement read: “The Polish Football Association has informed that, as of December 31, 2022, Czesław Micniewicz will cease to be the head coach of the Polish national team.”
Michniewicz took over the Polish national football team after the departure of Paulo Sousa. The former coach of the Legia Warszawa team became the coach at the end of January 2022. Under his leadership, the Polish players won the play-off with Sweden, thanks to which they received a promotion to the World Cup in Qatar.
During the tournament, which was held in the Middle East, Piaou Zeroni’s team played four matches. At the start of the competition, they were held to a goalless draw with Mexico. Then they beat Saudi Arabia, and at the end of the match in the group stage they lost to Argentina. Polish players were eliminated from the tournament in the 1/8 finals after losing to the French national team.
The Poles’ promotion from the group at world football’s biggest event wasn’t enough for Michniewicz to keep his job. Many experts and fans were annoyed by the style of play of the Polish national team, which focused most of the time on defense. In Michniewicz’s favor also the so-called did not work. Bonus issue. According to media reports, some Polish representatives also wanted the coach fired.
In total, Michniewicz captained the Polish national team in 13 matches. During this time, Biało-Czerwoni won five times and had to swallow the bitterness of defeat the same number of times.
It is not yet known who will replace the 52-year-old coach. According to the information provided by the journalists, there are such coaches as Andrei Shevchenko, Herve Renard, Roberto Martinez and others.
