Why is this important?
Czerniawska, like Smidt, claims to have escaped repression in her country. However, her account may be part of the information war waged by Russia and Belarus. In an interview with Belarusian television, Cherniavskaya presented herself as a political opponent and claimed that there is no freedom of expression in Latvia.
What did Czerniawska say?
Czerniawska claimed that Latvian citizens who do not support Ukraine are accused of being Russian agents. In addition, she spoke about alleged fraud during the recent European Parliament elections, and said that her country was “occupied” by the United States. Finally, she praised Alexander Lukashenko regarding security in the country and warned Belarusians against “Western values.”
Who is Czerniawska?
Czerniawska, 41, is an accountant by education and currently a housewife. She ran for the European Parliament on the lists of the Latvian Youth League, a populist party that opposes, among others, cash curbs and LGBT+ propaganda. She lived in the United States in the past, but was expelled for violating immigration law.
