The first group matches of the Olympic volleyball qualifiers were held in Rio de Janeiro. The event included: Brazil, Italy, Iran, Cuba, Ukraine, Germany, Czech Republic and Qatar.

Germany and Brazil advanced. The tournament in Rio was full of surprising results. German national volleyball players caused a sensation. Michal Winiarski’s team, with the excellent George Grozer, beat Brazil and Italy 3-1 day after day. Promotion was clinched in the penultimate round after defeating Qatar 3-0, and in the end, as a reserve team, they defeated Ukraine in three sets.
Before the last series of matches, three teams still had a chance to advance from second place – Brazil, Italy and Cuba. The hosts finally won the Olympic passport by defeating the Italian national team with a score of 3-2. Moments after the promotion, coach Renan Dal Zotto resigned to continue leading the Brazilian national team.
The biggest loser from qualification is the world champion, Italy, who lost in three matches – 1:3 against Germany, 1:3 against Cuba and in the direct promotion tie against Brazil. The Iranian national team performed horribly and fired its coach during the event. They achieved only one win – 3-1 in the match against Qatar and finished in penultimate place in the table.
The volleyball qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be held from September 30 to October 8. The events were held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Tokyo (Japan) and Xi’an (China). The top two teams from each of the three tournaments advance.
