Jackson’s comments have already received a response from Amazon Studios: Taking over the rights to the series requires us to isolate ourselves from the films. We have great respect for Peter Jackson and The Lord of the Rings. We’re excited that she can’t wait to watch The Rings of Power.
The complex situation around the series “Lord of the Rings”
According to sources from The Hollywood Reporter, the attitude about The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was very subtle, which affected the creators’ interactions with Peter Jackson. Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay turned on Jackson on a private basis, but legal obligations forced Amazon Studios to isolate themselves from the films.
While preparing for the series, management in the studio also changed. In 2019, program director Sharon Tal Yguadu, who defended Jackson’s participation in the project, left. Instead, he opposed JRR Tolkien’s heirs – which should come as no surprise since they had no contributions to his films, and criticized Christopher Tolkien for turning his father’s books into “youth action films”. However, the Tolkien Estate is involved in the series “The Rings of Power”: Amazon paid $250 million for the rights to make it.
