According to reports from Steam users, it is possible in some cases to use PlayStation VR2 on PC without having to buy the official and expensive adapter released by Sony.
According to RoadToVR, users can plug the PS VR2 headset directly into their graphics card’s USB-C port, provided the GPU has a dedicated VirtualLink port. VirtualLink is a USB-C standard designed to easily connect VR headsets, providing power, video, and data transfer in a single connector.
Unfortunately, this standard has not gained popularity and is not widely available. Therefore, in practice, the VirtualLink port can only be found on a few slightly older graphics card models. These include some RTX 20 Super, Radeon RX 6000, RX 7000, and Radeon VII processors. Even then, compatibility is not fully guaranteed – for example, only the Founder’s Edition RTX 2060 has this port.
The easiest way to check if it works is to download the PSVR 2 app from Steam, although the following NVIDIA and AMD cards (with VirtualLink port) are theoretically supported:
- GeForce RTX 2060
- GeForce RTX 2070
- GeForce RTX 2070 Super
- GeForce RTX 2080
- GeForce RTX 2080 Super
- GeForce RTX 2080 Ti
- Quadro RTX 4000
- Quadro RTX 5000
- Quadro RTX 6000
- Quadro RTX 8000
- Radion 7
- Radeon RX 6000
- Radeon RX 7000
Since the VirtualLink port has not gained widespread popularity, the option to connect PS VR2 without an expensive Sony adapter is limited to owners of slightly older graphics cards. However, if a user is lucky enough to own a compatible GPU, they can enjoy the PS VR2 collection on PC without having to spend an additional €59.99 for an official adapter.
Of course, in the absence of a VirtualLink port, the PlayStation VR2 will require the use of an adapter provided by Sony. However, it is worth knowing that there is an alternative way to connect the glasses to the computer, at least for owners of certain older graphics card models.
Gamers who want to enjoy PlayStation VR2 on their PC and avoid additional costs should check if their GPU has the required VirtualLink port.
