The government's dilemma in the Netherlands
The impasse in building a ruling coalition became apparent in mid-January due to divisions among liberals from the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy over the refugee law.
Leaders of the Party for Freedom, the Freedom Party for Democracy, the Citizen Farmers' Movement (BBB) and Peter Umtsigt's New Social Contract group are participating in the talks on the new coalition. Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported that these parties are currently considering a scenario in which their leaders will not join the government but will remain in parliament, and the government will be formed from experts and politicians not closely associated with any of these groups.
Reuters reported that the negotiator appointed to implement the plan will present his findings to Parliament on Thursday.
Attempts to form a government became complicated in January when the party's senators, against the will of party leader Dylan Jeselgoz, announced their support for a bill requiring municipalities to accept asylum seekers. In October 2023, the bill gained support in the lower house of parliament, but liberal representatives there voted against its adoption.
Wilders protested against the decision of the VVD senators, who consider issues related to refugees and migrants a priority. The Freedom Party opposed the adoption of a law forcing local governments to accept asylum seekers.
