“Poor Creatures”: Emma Stone and the Fullness of Femininity

George Lanthimoscreator of, among others, “The Favourite” and “The Lobster” – films that remain in the memory for a long time, this time he adapted a novel by Alasdair Gray entitled “poor creatures”. And he did it in such an amazing way that the work draws you in from the first minutes. On screen we see a mad scientist, Dr. Goodwin Baxter (played by the great William Defoe), who resurrects the deceased Bella Baxter, giving her a completely clean slate. After returning to the world of the living, the woman begins her life completely anew – free of any prejudices or restrictions.

The main character is played by Academy Award winner Emma Stone, creating a charming character that is difficult to take your eyes off. Bella Baxter gets a second chance and a chance to live her life again. The heroine takes the viewer on an extraordinary journey – to explore the world with all their senses.

Bella Baxter is a mixture of expressive female characters – we can see Elizabeth Bennet from “Pride and Prejudice”, Wednesday Addams from “The Addams Family” and Alice from “Alice in Wonderland”. He eagerly learns about the world and takes full advantage of it. He rediscovers the magic of life – initially under the watch of his guardian, who finally loses control and sets off on a wonderful and colorful journey across all continents.

He travels there with corrupt lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), exploring different places, things, people, experiences and emotions with the joy of a child. He does what he wants. He says what he thinks. She violates all social norms and norms, being a very vivid image of a completely liberated woman.

“Poor Creatures” is produced by Searchlight Pictures. The director is Giorgos Lanthimos and the screenwriter is Tony McNamara. This is the second collaboration between Lanthimos and McNamara (“The Favorite”).
