The Parisians believed in a miracle until the end, but it was not supposed to happen and it did not happen. Rafael Nadal, who has been struggling with injuries, may have ended his singles adventure at Roland Garros on Monday. The match looked like a tournament final.

“Rafa we love you,” “You are the best,” “Rafa striker” – these are just a few of the many chants heard during Rafael Nadal’s match on Monday at Roland Garros in Paris. The referee had to repeatedly calm the crowd, which had not hidden its sympathy since the start of the match.

We could see that we were dealing with an extraordinary event even before the two players took to the court. A crowd of fans had gathered on the steps leading to the stands at the end of the match between Iga Świątek. The match between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal was scheduled immediately after the Polish women’s match. The fans were so excited that even during the warm-up, the appearance of new fans in the stands and the temporary interruption of the action caused irritation among those who had already taken their seats.

There were not only disputes over seats among fans, but above all among journalists. The organizers had not expected crowds and did not require advance reservations. It turned out that there were twice as many people in the stadium as there were seats. Some journalists considered the match so important that they preferred to watch it live through the 10-centimeter windows in the commentators’ box doors rather than follow the competition on television.

Those fans who managed to sit in the stands did their best to help their idol from the very beginning. Almost every point won caused an explosion of ecstasy in the stands. Even the representatives of the host country could not count on such help from the stands in Paris. By comparison, the points scored by Djokovic were rewarded with only gentle applause. In fact, there was no need to follow the events on the court to know who was in a better position at the moment.

But this time, the support from the side was of little use, because Djokovic was in complete control of the events on the court from the first ball. The Serb served brilliantly, often forcing his opponent mercilessly to run to the net, and Nadal was only able to respond with his trademark shots at the end of the second set.

Although the Spaniard denied before the match that this would be his last singles match at Roland Garros, it was clear that it would be difficult for the 38-year-old, who is suffering from injury, to return to his best and fight for his 15th title in Paris. The match with Djokovic clearly exposed his weaknesses. And there was probably no one in the stands who did not take into account that Monday’s match was the end of Nadal’s great singles history at Roland Garros.

The tennis player will also compete in doubles with Carlos Alcaraz during the matches, and still has a good chance to combine his performance successfully in Paris.
