Snake hunters have begun an annual 10-day hunt for invasive Burmese pythons in the Everglades ecoregion at the southern tip of Florida, the Associated Press reported.
The Florida Python Challenge began 10 years ago.To educate residents about the threats posed by invasive species, while also generating interest in the Everglades, where the national park of the same name is located, said Sarah Funk, a representative of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The Burmese python “is unfortunately a very common species in most of the natural areas of South Florida,” Funk said.
