Gary Lineker admitted years ago that “Football is a game where 22 men run after the ball, and in the end the Germans win anyway.” Recently, the very popular phrase has lost some of its meaning, as the aforementioned national team has been waiting for a victory in a major tournament since the World Cup 10 years ago. However, it is now imperative that the Germans are once again seen as favorites for a major tournament. Mainly because they are its hosts. The return to the national team of Toni Kroos, who intended to retire after winning the Champions League and European Championship, was also supposed to be crucial.
The 34-year-old was the key player in the first goal of the tournament. Kroos made a wonderful, very accurate long pass down the right wing, Joshua Kimmich passed the ball to Florian Wirtz, and the 21-year-old wonderkid, who had a fantastic season at Bayer Leverkusen, beat Angus Gunn with a brilliant shot.
The Germans needed just 10 minutes to get going and take the lead, and a few minutes later the score was 2-0! Once again we can talk about the amazing goal scored by the 21-year-old. This time, veteran Ilkay Gundogan started, Kai Havertz passed the ball to Jamal Musiala, and he had the Allianz Arena standing in jubilation once again!

VAR had to intervene in the Germany-Scotland match. And he received praise
Not enough emotions? Well, after just five minutes, Jamal Musiala started dribbling, ran into the penalty area with the ball, and after a contact with Kieran Tierney, fell to the turf. The referee pointed to the 11-metre line, but after analysis by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), it was found that the violation occurred several centimeters from the edge of the penalty area, which was perfectly signaled to the fans on television. After an interesting free kick, Havertz shot, but Gunn blocked it.
At the end of the first half, the Video Assistant Referee intervened again, this time at the expense of the Scots. Ryan Porteous brutally attacked Gundogan, and fans were waiting for a decision whether it would be “just” a penalty for the hosts, or perhaps a red card for attacking an opponent’s leg with a straight leg. I ended up with a harsher sentence and there was no doubt that it was the right decision. Havertz scored from eleven meters and by the break the Germans were leading 3-0 and had a numerical advantage throughout the second half of the match.
The Germans had no mercy! Demolition at the beginning of Euro 2024
After the break, both coaches made changes, but it didn’t change anything. The Germans dominated the field and showed no mercy to their opponents. When Julian Nagelsmann bet on the substitutes, they responded in the best way possible. Niklas Volkrug produced a stunning shot just five minutes after entering the field and the hosts were already 4-0 ahead!
Shortly afterwards Volkrug scored again after a pass from another substitute, Thomas Müller, but this time he was in an offside position. The opponents responded with a goal after a cross from a free kick when… Antonio Rudiger scored into his own net!
But the Germans finished the shot and the substitute scored again – this time Emre Can from outside the penalty area!
Germany shined at the start of the 2024 European Championship, winning 5:1 and taking a big step towards qualifying for the knockout stage. The hosts’ next match will be on Wednesday, June 19, at 12:00 GMT, with Hungary at 18:00. On the same day at 21.00 the Scots will play against Switzerland.
