Robert Downey Jr. Did you save Mel Gibson's career?
Mel Gibson can say he was scanned before it was cool. His career collapsed after a recording of him calling police officers and chanting anti-Semitic slogans was circulated in the media in 2006. According to the “Lethal Weapon” star, he was saved from eternal damnation in Hollywood by his co-star, Robert Downey Jr. “Air America”. He mentions it this way:
I once found myself in a bad situation that almost ended my career. I was drunk, a police car showed up and I said some stupid things. Suddenly I was blacklisted. I'm a model when it comes to canceling. A few years later, Robert was accepting an award and invited me to the ceremony. It was always like we were on an upswing – when he was up, things were bad for me, and when things were going well for me, he was having a crisis. So I wasn't in Hollywood at the time, and he put in a good word for me. It was a very brave and kind gesture. I love him for that reason.
The ceremony in question is the American Film Awards, where Robert Downey Jr. participated. It was awarded in 2011. Then he said:
Join me in forgiving my friend. Give him a clean slate like you once gave me, and allow him to continue contributing to our art without shame. Unless you yourself are without sin. But if so, you have chosen the wrong industry.
