According to Romanian media, the night from Tuesday to Wednesday was the coldest since the beginning of the winter. Thermometers in the city of Negreste, located near the border with Moldova, showed minus 19 degrees Celsius. According to the Romanian National Meteorological Administration (ANM), the coming night is also expected to be very cold – in the east and center of the country the temperature may drop to -16°C.
Frost and snow are annoying
The Stirile Pro TV portal reported on Wednesday that five residents of the country died due to hypothermia at night. Three people died in Galac on the border with Moldova, one in Buzau, and one in Bascany.
In Iași, on Wednesday, the electrical wires supplying the tram froze, causing transportation difficulties – and residents were forced to wait for the tram for up to tens of minutes. All day long, people were reporting to hospitals with frostbite and injuries from falling on the ice.
Residents of Romania are also affected by snowstorms. Heavy rain on Tuesday led to the suspension of some communications from Bucharest, Constanta, Iași and Galața. Many cars got stuck in snow drifts – in one village snow plows overcame snow-covered mountains.
Meteorologists expect low temperatures to continue until at least mid-January.
