Activists linked to jailed opposition figure Alexei Navalny put up anti-Vladimir Putin billboards in several cities – and they contained a QR code that redirects to an anti-Putin website. According to the SOTA website, billboards have already been removed in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny posted videos online showing street signs reading “Russia. Happy New Year.” There were also QR codes on billboards, redirecting to the “Russia Without Putin” website.
Meduza reported that the portal was created by Navalny’s associates. They want to run a campaign through this site.
According to the SOTA website, billboards have already been removed in Moscow and St. Petersburg. A representative of the agency that runs outdoor advertising said that initially the QR code was redirected to a website with a New Year’s contest, after which the code was apparently changed.
Navalny calls for a vote against Putin
The director of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, Ivan Zhdanov, announced that he would demand compensation for the destroyed posters.
On Thursday, Navalny called on Russians to participate in the 2024 presidential elections and vote against Putin for any other candidate. The appeal was published on Navalny’s online blog.
“The presidential elections will be held on March 17, 2024. We call on everyone to go to the polls on that day and vote against Vladimir Putin. You can do this by voting for any of the other candidates,” the statement said.
