According to the New York Times, the reason for the sudden dismissal was Altman’s conflict with the company’s chief scientist, co-founder and board member, Ilya Sutskever. Sutskever allegedly believed that the technology created by the organization could be dangerous, while Altman paid little attention to this issue and pushed forward guided by the logic of commercial competition.


Altman, along with other OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, was scheduled to join Microsoft, the company’s largest shareholder.


Message from three-quarters of the crew


On Monday, 550 of OpenAI’s 700 employees (or more than three-quarters of the entire workforce) signed an open letter threatening to resign unless Altman is reinstated. The signatories demand the resignation of the company’s current board of directors.



“Your actions have shown that you are unable to monitor OpenAI. We are unable to work for or with people who lack competence, judgment, and interest in our mission and our people,” the letter to four OpenAI managers said. The signatories are considering joining Altman and Brockman at Microsoft. They emphasized: “We will take this step immediately unless all current board members resign… and we reinstate Sam Altman and Greg Brockman.”


Sam Altman was one of the founders of OpenAI in 2015, along with Y Combinator incubator Brockman, investor Peter Thiel, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Y Combinator co-founder Jessica Livingston, and IT company Infosys. In the early years of its operation, the company was a non-profit organization, which changed in 2019. OpenAI became popular earlier this year with the introduction of the chatbot ChatGPT.
