Sarina Wiegman could replace Gareth Southgate in England squad

Could a woman manage England? According to talkSPORT, the FA is seriously considering replacing the departing Gareth Southgate with Sarina Wiegman.

England fans finally got it. Gareth Southgate released a statement on Tuesday announcing that he would no longer be in charge. The 53-year-old has not been received with the greatest reception in the community given the style of play the Albion boys have played during his tenure, but it must be acknowledged that he has still achieved a lot. Two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final are successes that no manager would be ashamed of.

With Southgate’s announcement, names of potential successors have begun to be circulated. Thomas Tuchel has already expressed his intention to join, but the media sees an English manager as the favourite, specifically pointing to Eddie Howe or Graham Potter. But it turns out there is another candidate in the mix, or rather… a candidate. talkSPORT journalists have reported that Sarina Wiegman could take over.

The Dutchwoman is considered one of the best coaches in the world of women’s football. Since 2020, she has been working with the England national team, with whom she won the European Championship in 2022 and finished second in the World Cup in 2023. Previously, she also worked with the Dutch team and can boast the same titles there as well.

If the FA does decide to take such a dramatic step, Wiegman would become the first female coach to lead a men’s team at such a high level.
