Titanica tragedy
On the night of 14-15 April 1912, during her maiden voyage on the Southampton-Cherbourg-Queenstown-New York route, the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank. The disaster claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people and led to changes in maritime safety laws and regulations. The Titanic hit the iceberg at 23:40. The ship sank for 2.5 hours. Due to a shortage of lifeboats, only 710 people survived the tragedy.
We spent two hours discussing the first class cabin carpet and 15 minutes discussing the lifeboat problem. He spoke Alexander Carlyle, later director of the Harland & Wolff shipyard. The shipyard and the White Star Line were reportedly concerned that having too many lifeboats on board would cause her to become badly pressurized, meaning the voyage would be unsafe. Remember, the ship was described as “unsinkable” and the cruise itself was supposed to be “a luxury such as had never been seen in the North Atlantic”.
The most famous film based on these events is James Cameron’s Titanic from 1997. 25 years later, on February 10, 2025, a restored version of the production was released in theaters. Cameron’s film won 11 Academy Awards and grossed nearly $2.2 billion. (Its budget was $200 million.)
