Why is this important?
The elimination of the SR is an important step in the fight against extremism in Serbia. Wahhabism, a fundamentalist Islamic doctrine, is gaining ground in the Muslim-majority region of Sandzak. The actions of the Serbian services are aimed at reducing the influence of extremist groups and ensuring security in the country.
Who was Real?
S.R. was a leader of the Serbian Wahhabi movement, active on social media. After serving a 13-year, 6-month sentence for his involvement in a clash with police, he became a key figure in the Wahhabi movement in Sandzak. He had been in hiding since June, when a member of his group injured a policeman guarding the Israeli embassy in Belgrade.
What did the Serbian Interior Minister say?
After the June attack in Belgrade, Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic announced increased surveillance of Wahhabis in the country. “We cannot allow extremism to threaten the security of our citizens,” Dacic stressed. “We will continue our activities to eliminate such threats.”
What would be the consequences?
The elimination of the Socialist Revolutionary Party may weaken the Wahhabi movement in Serbia, but at the same time it may lead to an escalation of tensions in the Sandžak region. Serbian agencies will have to be prepared for possible reprisals by supporters of extremist ideologies.
