Brecel and Selby deservedly reached the match for the title of world champions. Both of them did well in this year’s tournament, and on the way to the final they eliminated very dangerous opponents. The first defeated, among others, Mark Williams or Ronnie O’Sullivan, the second – John Higgins, as well as even Mark Allen.

In the decisive confrontation, the initiative belonged to the lowest-ranked player from the very beginning. After the first session, which took place on Sunday, the Belgian led 6: 2, taking advantage of the fact that his rival was exhausted by the semi-finals, which dragged on until late at night.
The Englishman was not going to give up, and after the break, also because of the maximum break, he made up for some of the losses and after Sunday he was losing only 8: 9.

On Monday, Precel had a better opening again. In the third session – and the first of the day – the youngest player scored a break of more than 100 points four times. Thanks to his excellent position at the table, he leapt five games clear of Selby (15:10), three steps away from a historic victory.
When in the decisive session it increased to 16:10, it seemed that the fate of the competition was slowly closing. As it turns out, nothing more wrong. The four-time world champion (2014, 2016, 2017, 2021) looked more and more confident with every minute, and the Belgian showed his nerve for taking high risks in the match.
The Englishman won five frames in a row and it was only 15:16. What’s more, Selby should have equalized, but missed relatively minor red points twice, which Precel had to take advantage of (17:15). The player from Dilsen-Stokken followed suit, and the title – the first of his Crucible Theater career – was sealed with an astonishing 112-run approach in Game #33.

– I can’t say anything clever, I don’t know why at all. Mark is the strongest possible opponent. When I arrived at 16:15, I didn’t think I would win – he said warmly after winning.
