The year turned out to be an epochal one in politics. Donald Tusk has just announced that he wants Poland to compete for the Summer Games. Not in 2036, but in four or eight years. It certainly won’t be cheaper, but there are other important things in this regard. First of all, the decision on who will organize the Olympics in these years will be made in six years at the earliest. And Donald Tusk may not even be prime minister by then. In fact, the current coalition may no longer govern.
But the Prime Minister wants to kill several birds with one stone. He knows that the platform is classified as those who do not like big projects (see Delay decision on CPK)And IO will be a big project.
Regardless Poland finished only 42nd in the medal standings in Paris.making way for, among others, the Philippines, Algeria, Indonesia, Cuba and Taiwan. This is the worst result for the Poles since the 1956 Melbourne Games, almost 70 years ago. Calling this result a disaster is not far from the truth.
And this is not a random character. Radosław Bicewicz – who is also the president of the Polish Basketball Federation – is a close friend of Jacek Sasin, who in the past lent him money to build stairs in his house. In the spring of 2023, he will replace Andrzej Krasnicki as president of the Polish Olympic Committee, who had been the head of the committee since 2010 and unexpectedly resigned from running for re-election.

There were stories among sports activists about how the new president, when applying for the position, was promised a lot of money from state treasury companies, which were then supervised by Jacek Sasin as head of the Ministry of State Assets.
The government has no influence on the election of the Polish Olympic Committee’s board of directors, but it does influence the millions that flow from state coffers. According to Onet’s information, the government was analyzing the possibility of state coffers withdrawing from some sports sponsorship agreements, including the Polish Olympic Committee, even before the Paris event.

Moreover The Minister of Sports published two messages on Monday. In it, the President of the Polish Olympic Committee, Radoslaw Pesiewicz, and 44 sports federations were asked to provide a list of the names of all persons who had received accreditation for the Olympic Games.
He also wanted to know the details of the participation of the heads and members of the boards of directors of the unions in the delegations in Paris. “I ask you to treat the matter as a priority and submit the above information to the Ministry of Sports and Tourism by August 14, 2024.” — we read in the magazine Netras.

By the way, it turned out that at the end of the PiS government, the wife of the head of the Polish Olympic Committee received more than a million Polish zlotys for a few months of work in a state-owned bank. This was Pekao SA, headed by Leszek Skiba, who was associated with the PiS.
Agnieszka Piesiewicz’s CV, sent to the bank at the time, shows that the wife of the Polish Olympic Committee president had previously worked, among other things, as an office technician, a marketing and sales manager for an office supplies company, and a clerk in a parliamentary office. She also sat on the boards of her husband’s companies. She declared herself “communicative” English.

As we learned unofficially, the bank has no trace of the consultant’s work, including analytics or reports. Moreover, her work at Pekao SA was very short – it lasted only half a year. Nevertheless, she made a fortune. A total of PLN 1.15 million, which is equivalent to PLN 164,000. PLN per month.
Piotr Serafin is a candidate for the post of EU Commissioner. This is how Tusk made a deal with Duda
That’s a lot. A lot. However, we have no doubt that the future “Polish” EU Commissioner will probably spend much more. And the Prime Minister has finally named a candidate. It’s Piotr Serafin.
He has been a trusted collaborator of Donald Tusk for years. In 2014-2019, he was head of government for Tusk when he was president of the European Council. Previously, in 2010-2012, he was deputy chief of staff to Janusz Lewandowski, then EU Commissioner for the Budget. In 2012-2014, he was State Secretary for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At the end of 2023, he replaced PiS candidate Andrzej Szadoń as Poland’s permanent representative to the European Union. Sado became a hero of the European media when, in October 2018, he personally dismantled the memorial plaque at the Polish representative office in Brussels. The name of Donald Tusk, who opened the representative office building in 2011, was on the plaque.
Interestingly, President Andrzej Duda has not yet approved Serafin’s nomination for the post of Permanent Representative, so he is still officially only the head of mission in Brussels. On the other hand, he accepted Serafin’s nomination for the post of EU Commissioner three days later. This is important because of the changes to the law that PiS introduced a few months before taking power.
We are talking about the so-called Law on Jurisdiction. The main provisions of the new law concern the influence of the President on the holding of Polish positions in EU structures. This is a member of the European Commission, a member of the Board of Auditors, a judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union, an Advocate General of the European Court of Justice, a member of the Economic and Social Committee, a member of the Committee of the Regions and a director of the European Investment Bank.
The most important of these, of course, is the EU Commissioner, who is appointed by the government, and this has so far been the exclusive prerogative of the Council of Ministers. However, under the new regulations, the president can block a particular candidate if he does not like it.

However, he doesn’t want to stop Serafina. As Donald Tusk revealed, he met with Andrzej Duda a few days ago on a ship docked in Tricity. We may soon find out whether Seraphin’s acceptance is part of a broader deal.
By the way, Donald Tusk once again denied his desire to run for president. He announced that we will meet with the KO candidate – and possibly the entire coalition on October 15 – before Christmas. It is possible that Jarosław Kaczyński will announce his decision on this matter earlier.

One thing is almost certain – it will not be Mariusz Blaszczak and it will not be Beata Szydlo. Maybe the young and unknown Zbigniew Bogucki. Or maybe Mateusz Morawiecki, if the National Electoral Commission withdraws budget support from the PiS.
Well, whatever it is, Morawiecki knows how to arrange money.
