Nearly 3,000 people were evacuated ahead of Typhoon Haikui Sunday, which is expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds to southern and eastern Taiwan. All domestic flights have been cancelled.
Typhoon Haikui is expected to make landfall in the sparsely populated mountainous region far southeast of Taiwan late Sunday afternoon local time, as provinces and cities in the east and south canceled classes and declared a day off for workers.
The Taiwan government said 2,868 people had been evacuated from settlements, mainly in the south and east of the country.
Airlines have suspended their flights
Taiwan’s two major domestic airlines, UNI Air and Mandarin Airlines, canceled all flights on Sunday. Ferries to offshore islands have also been cancelled.
The military has mobilized troops and equipment to help with flood control and evacuation.
After passing through southern Taiwan, the element is expected to cross the Taiwan Strait and reach China. However, Typhoon Haokui is much weaker than Typhoon Saola, which hit China’s southeastern coast on Saturday.
