The show “Alien: Romulus” takes place between the events presented in the films “Alien – Eighth Passenger of the Nostromo” and “Alien – The Final Clash.” The titular Romulus is the wreckage of the Weyland-Yutani research station drifting in space, a tasty morsel for a group specializing in “recovering” valuable items from abandoned stations and spaceships. It soon turns out to be a deadly trap.
Fede Alvarez’s film is supposed to be a nod to the classics. The director has announced that the film will feature mostly practical special effects. Here’s what he had to say about working on the set a few weeks ago:
“I try really hard to avoid green screens, so we built sets and models for each creature,” he added. “Everything had to be built, so we really lived in those spaces. But I’m not a big fan of computer effects either. I come from a background where I learned how to create visual effects myself. I still do that myself on set. Sometimes I edit the effects on my computer and work on them. The idea is to use what works best in a given shot. But if we’re talking about going head-to-head with a monster, nothing beats traditional effects.”
