“Wherever we go, there is always a shortage of beer, even in a country like Germany,” Klaus Amundsen, a journalist for the Danish newspaper BT, said with a smile.
The Danes drank all kinds of beer in Stuttgart. There was a lack of bars and fan areas
Jörg Köpfler, who oversees UEFA’s official fan zones, admitted that organizers were not prepared for “such a great desire” from Danish fans. “They are everywhere and drink loads of beer,” Kopfler admitted. “And yesterday, many of the biggest bars downtown ran out of it.”
Danish media described the situation as “beer chaos in Stuttgart”. The atmosphere in the fan zones became tense when beer rationing began from Sunday afternoon, a few hours before the match.
TV2 showed how fans waited an hour to buy beer vouchers, then another 60 minutes to redeem them. At one point, a few hours before the game, impatient fans formed a red-and-white parade and headed into town to drink beer in droves. Unfortunately, most German stores are closed on Sunday, which makes the weather even hotter.
